Synopsis
Framed around the filmmaker’s journey to find a deeper sense of belonging in her homeland of Somerset and greater awe and mysticism in a rational world, Storytellers explores the power of myth, fantasy and personal stories to connect us more deeply to our communities and landscape.
Holding fragments of her own myth-making close, she questions the role of folktales, fantasy and personal stories in deepening her sense of belonging to the land and people around her today.
Her tale entwines with Bristol-based oral storyteller Corinne Harragin and Cornwall-based artist and puppeteer, Reg Payn. Sharing their experiences and expertise, they reveal the importance of stories in their own quest for happiness and belonging, and the joy of engaging more deeply with our imaginations.
The film is a visual tapestry of poetic footage, static interviews, home VHS video and analog photography.
Through a personal and intimate account, it uncovers some of the hidden ways tales embed a person in a place; form the lifeblood of community; offer us much needed escape from the responsibilities and monotony of everyday life; and create unbreakable, invisible threads between places, hearts and history.
